A BRIEF ACCOUNT
OF THE BRAHMIN TEXTS
Introduntion
The Brahman granthas(texts) were originated in 800-500 B.C.
what are these Brahmin Granthas.? These Brahmin Granthas were composed
associating the Vedic texts. Having taken a single point of a Vedic texts these
were composed. These can be similar into Pali commentaries. Because they were
used to clear the difficult statements in Pali canon, it was a big help for
later followers. As well the Brahmana granthas also composed to solve the
difficult points in the Vedic texts. They were called Brahmin Texts as they
were composed by Brahmins. Further we can see that same ideas in Vedic texts
have been developed by using the Brahmin texts. Various story are added which
cannot be seen in Vedic texts by the authors
All Brahmin Texts can be divided into four according to the
Vedic texts.
- Rig Veda
- Yajur Veda
- Saman Veda
- Atharwan Veda
RIG
VEDIC BRAHMIN TEXTS
There are not so many books that are connected to this Veda.
There are only two texts belonging to this.
They are
- Aitareya Brahman
- Kaushithaki Brahman
Aitaredya brahman
There are 40 Adyayas (Chapters). They have divided into 8
parts called Panchika. Each Panchika have 5 chapters. Mahidasa Aithareya is the
author of this. There are prose as well as verses in this Brahmin text.
Soma yoga
Gavayamna yoga
Dvadashaga Yoga
Agnihotra Yoga
Rajasuya yoga are described here.
Kausitaki Brahmin
This is the second book of Rigveda. This is also narrates
some unclear words or content in the Rigveda. There are 30 adyayas and 15
Chapters here. 1-6 it explains Ahara yoga and some other yogas. Rest portions
are describing Soma yoga as the Aitareya Brahmin.
Yajur
Vedic Brahmin texts
The Yajur Veda has two parts called krushna yajur
Veda and Shukla Yajur Veda. The
Brahmin texts also have composed according to those books. Taitariya Brahmin texts is the Brahmin
text which belongs to the Krushna yajur Veda.
Taitariya Brahmin texts is belongs to the Katha and
maitrayani branches .actually this wasn’t used to narrate about the Yoga. There
are no large statements on them. But it has mentioned about Purusha meda and
stage offerings.
Sathapatha Brahmin
This book belongs to the Sukla yajur veda. This is only the
book that refer in Sukla yajur Veda. A branch called kanva and mandhyndina held
this text. 100 Adyayas are included in this text. They have divided into 14
parts or chapters.
SAMA VEDIC BRAHMIN TEXTS
This is the 3rd Vedic text and this holds many
books. There are eight Brahmin book in this Veda. The first four book are
considered as potential and the book that gives ancient information. Final four
are indexes of Sama Veda.
Tandya Brahmana
Sadvinsa Brahmana
Jaimini/ tavalkara Brahnama
Sama vidhana rahmana
Chandogya Brahmana
Devatadyaya
Arseya
Vamsa Brahmana
The tandya Brahmana has been composed by Tandya people.
There are 40 Adyayas and first 25 are called tandya. Final 10 are called
Chandogya.The Sadvinsa Brahmin text narrates about some mysterious things.
Final chapter of this is named as Adbhuta Brahmana. Here mentions many harmful
things that cause for human. The previous signatures of hamful things and the
treatment for them also further explains in this text. Especially the
activities of gods are mentioned here.
ATHARVA VEDIC BRAHMIN TEXTS
Gopathabrahmana is the only book that can be seen in this context.
There are 11 chapter of this text. They have mainly divided into two parts.1
here though the 1st part is old second part does not appear like
that. Then scholar has suspect that one as a present addition.
There can be seen same information that are related to the
Sathapatha Brahmana. The author might have associated the shathapatha Brahmana
to fulfill his duty. Two main characteristics can be seen in this text. First
one is the utterance of Atharva hymns and the second one is the expressions of
four kids of yoga doers and the excellence of the Brahma
This article gives some knowledge about the Brahmin text but
not vastly. Above mentioned books are dedicated to contribute the progress of
Vedic text and they were very helpful for later scholars to easily identify the
difficult points that have narrated in Vedic texts
