THE IMPORTANCE OF
LEARNING GRAMMAR
The understanding of grammar and syntax is undoubtedly important. In fact its is essential to make any progress when learning a language and to be able to enjoy this process. It allows us to have fun and to be passionate about speaking the language
Grammar is very important, no matter how much the rules change, as it is what makes it possible for us all to communicate and understand what we see, and what we say.
Grammar (structures
and vocabulary with its complexities, such as word formation, suffixes, phrasal
verbs, idiomatic expressions) is essential. However, it is not an end in
itself. It is a "vehicle" (or a car) for the learner to use for
communication. We, the teachers, are more like driving instructors (as well as
a good mechanic who knows the engine of the car) who teach our students how to
drive the car, enjoy driving it and at the same time gives "knowledge on
the traffic regulations" (=language function; register). And some of us
may be excellent as "Formula 1" instructors, teaching learners how to
speed up (TOEFL, IELTS, etc) to get finish as fast as possible (to get higher
scores), and this requires the learners to know the detail of
"engine" (grammar) and the "circuits" (the tricks of the
tests) so that the learners can reach the finish line as fast as they wish and
yet safely.
Language
comes before grammar. A child learns how to speak the language first by
imitating the adults around him. As time goes on, he forms sentences using
structures established in the language proper. The English language is made up
of structures such as Subject-Verb-Object, Subject-Verb-Complement,
Subject-Verb-Indirect Object-Direct Object, etc. There are a host of other
structures too which are all centered around the verb. Technically,
one needs to know these structures in order to write and speak English well.
The only way to learn these structures is by the assiduous study of English
grammar. Syntax, which is the proper arrangement of words in a sentence,
teaches one how to write sentences in a meaningful manner. For example, The man
rode the horse. has a different meaning from The horse rode the man. although
the structure of both these sentences is that of Subject-Verb-Object (S-V-O).
Hence,
one gains facility and confidence in the English language by methodically
studying grammar and syntax. Reading good English books serves to enhance one's
language proficiency.
The understanding of
grammar and syntax is undoubtedly important. In fact its is essential to
make any progress when learning a language and to be able to enjoy this
process. It allows us to have fun and to be passionate about speaking the
language.
Learning a language
is like building a house. One may know so much vocabulary but still can’t
speak the language . Why is that?” Well lets try to imagine
vocabulary as bricks. Each new word is a brick. And it’s true — you need to
collect a lot of bricks to build a house.
But no matter how
big a pile of bricks you have collected on your building site, they will not
sort themselves into a house by themselves. You have to do it, and you need
to know how to do it.Some people know how
to learn a language by themselves in the same way that some handy people
know how to build a house by themselves. But most of us will need at least an
initial blueprint. We give you that blueprint. We will tell you how to build
your house, help you to understand where to put the bricks and in which order,
so that you can build the beautiful home you. dreamed of, on solid, stable
foundations. You can then add and change rooms, decorate, redecorate
as you wish, and you will have fun doing it because you will know how.
Knowledge of grammar rules reduces making mistakes by learners. Without adequate
knowledge of English grammar rules learners often cannot create their own
grammatically correct sentences and often cannot understand what they read or
hear in English exactly. I believe what especially matters in effective
teaching and learning of English grammar is how clearly and easily
understandable all grammar rules are explained and whether adequate supportive
exercises with real life content are practiced to master that material. It
would take foreign learners much less time to learn grammar rules that are
explained to learners than to figure out grammar rules on their own intuitively
from texts because grammar rules may have exceptions and other peculiarities.
Grammar books with explanations and exercises have been published by
knowledgeable language specialists to make learning grammar easier so that
learners don't have to discover grammar rules anew the hard long way. In my
view English communicative integrated skills courses that practice listening,
speaking, reading and writing alongside pronunciation, grammar and vocabulary
are the most effective and the most comprehensive courses. Conventional
communicative English teaching and learning supported with adequate regular
long-term practice in listening comprehension and speaking in English yield
effective results. Lack of such practice in English by learners produces
speculations that conventional English learning and teaching methods don't work
We learn basic grammar
when we start to put sentences together as children. But, the actual ‘knowing’
of grammar is much more complex. Grammar teaches us how to build sentences,
about the types of words that we use and when we should use them. Grammar also
tells us what type of word we are using in any particular sentence.
There are lots of
different aspects to English grammar, and each is as important as the last. It
is English grammar that will allow you to be a better communicator, listener,
thinker, reader and writer. Having a knowledgeable understanding of grammar
will let you have a potentially rewarding career in many fields of work.
To put it simply,
grammar is a way in which we organize words, clauses and phrases into
meaningful conversation and communication. The organization of grammar all
depends on the logic. And, understanding grammar will mean you can think more
logically.
Grammar without logic
and organization means you cannot clearly put across your message. The more
grammar rules you understand, the clearer your communication is. This makes it
easier for you to be heard and to tell your story. Having an advanced knowledge
of grammar is something everyone should have.
Our grammar style is
how we communicate with others. Your particular style when using grammar shows
a lot about you. An advanced knowledge of grammar means you can create witty,
clever and interesting pieces for people to read. It also means you can be
totally unique as everyone’s style is different.
People will pay more
attention to what you have to say if you can communicate well with others. Just
look at some of the world’s famous authors and public speakers; they will have
a unique and stylish way of using grammar.
You can learn a lot
from reading other writer’s work. Even children’s books use grammar in its
simplest form. The best way to learn about the practical use of grammar is to
see it in practise. Read, read, read; you will soon understand the relationship
between writing and English grammar.
You may have amazing
ideas, but if you have little to no knowledge of English grammar, how are you
going to communicate them? The simple answer is that you aren’t going to.
You will be able to
fully appreciate how to get a message across if you can understand English
grammar. From reading complex writings to children’s books, grammar will enable
you to fully understand what you are reading or writing.
Some people who are
learning English as a second language make one simple, but massive mistake;
they forget to learn English grammar. Even basic grammar is better than none,
and the advance learning can always come later. Don’t limit the way in which
you can communicate with others by not learning all about English grammar.
Once you have mastered
English grammar, you will be able to communicate with everyone and anyone. You
will be able to understand the complex and the simple. So, yes, grammar is
vitally important – and that is definitely an understatement
In conclusion I would say that
grammar is very important not only for the intermediate or advanced levels but
also for a starter too. I prefer introducing grammar material in such a way
that the students can formulate the grammar rules themselves as a conclusion
from the structures given to them either in a short conversation, a funny
story, a song, an article, a letter or a movie. Such demonstrative material can
be selected by the teacher in accordance with the group's interests, field of
activities, age etc. based on the reflexive teacher's strategy and critical
thinking methodology. Also, grammar rules are better learnt when the students
feel the necessity of this or that structure, especially in unprepared speech,
like debates, expressing their opinion on various subjects, or role-plays
